Pelvic Health
Everyone Has a Pelvic Floor!
The pelvic floor is a unique group of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue at the base of your pelvis. Think of it as a supportive hammock that stretches from your pubic bone to your tailbone, and between your sitting bones side-to-side.
What Does the Pelvic Floor Do?
Supports pelvic organs (bladder, bowel, and uterus in women)
Controls bladder and bowel continence
Plays a role in sexual function
As a major component of your core it works with your deep tummy , back and breathing muscles to stabilise the spine and pelvis
Stretches significantly during childbirth
You Are NOT Alone – The Stats Speak Volumes:
9 in 10 people never talk to a health professional about their pelvic floor issues
1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over 55 experience incontinence
Up to 80% of pregnant women leak, and 30% continue to leak post-birth
At least 50% of post-menopausal women develop a Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Men have pelvic floors too! Pelvic floor muscle training helps improve sexual function and continence after prostate surgery
15% of women experience pain during sex
Pelvic floor muscle training is far more effective when individualised and specifically tailored by a qualified pelvic health physiotherapist. It’s easy to activate the wrong muscles and make your hard work ineffective
Common Symptoms That Can Be Effectively Treated with Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy:
Stress Incontinence: Leaking with laughing, coughing, jumping or running
Urge & Frequency Incontinence: Sudden, frequent urges to urinate with or without leakage
Pelvic Organ Prolapse: A feeling of heaviness or dragging in the pelvic area
Abdominal Muscle Separation (Diastasis Rectus Abdominis Muscle). This is normal in pregnancy but sometimes it doesn’t close up sufficiently and can cause instability and pain
Erectile Dysfunction in Men: Particularly post-prostate surgery
Pre/Postnatal Issues: Including incontinence, prolapse, pelvic joint pain, and low back pain
It’s Never Too Late! Age is no barrier — muscles can be strengthened at any stage of life.
